The Friends of Schuylkill River Park volunteer in many ways to improve and maintain Schuylkill River Park and to support recreation programming at the Markward Recreation Center. We raise funds for the park through individual and corporate donations, our annual Fall Festival, and our annual Eat, Drink, and be Green cocktail party fundraiser. Additionally, we have written and received grants for the park over the past several years, some of which were from CSX Railroad, the Dolfinger McMahon Foundation, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (via the William Penn Foundation), the Community Design Collaborative, Representative Babette Josephs, Senator Larry Farnese, and others. We host several large-scale park cleanups throughout the year, generally in sync with the Mayor's Philly Cleanup and the PHS/Department of Parks and Recreation's sponsored citywide efforts. There are several volunteer opportunities available:CLEANUPSWe welcome anyone who wants to join us for park cleanups. We typically have 2 cleanups in the Spring, and 2 in the Fall, each with a usual attendance of 15 - 30. We also host addtional cleanups when groups offer to send a team of volunteers from their organization. Sometimes volunteers are coordinated through Philadelphia Cares. In 2010, Philadelphia Cares arranged for a dedicated team from the IRS to help us out in the early spring. In 2009, we hosted a cleanup with The Green Team from BZBI.
EVENTSWe also need volunteers to help at events, particularly our Fall Festival. Duties include selling tickets, cooking food, helping with kid crafts, setting up for the day, manning the raffle/silent auction table, and breaking down at the end of the day. Our next Fall Festival is Saturday, October 15, 2011. If you are interested in donating a raffle or silent auction item, being a vendor, or volunteering for the 2011 festival, please email us at fsrporg@gmail.com MAILINGSIf you would like to help stuff, label, and stamp our newsletter mailing, please let us know. Our volume is typically around 600 - 800 letters sent about four times per year. We can always use help.YOU NAME ITIs there something you would like to do to benefit the park?
